i liked richie rich. haaaaa the weiner song. well played. your comic cons are awesome. enjoy that shit, you earned it. don't forget... you are a star, my dear. i'll keep an ear out for a comic con in sacramento. hey, i love hearing what your up to. still watching succession over here. always watching many different things while clothing designing. i haven't listed titles as they pop up, don't want to seem too whacko. but, from last 2 "what remains" "skylights in my hallways".
❤️this post KV and I especially love the title. 2 things off topic: would you consider doing a video where you played guitar along to some of the tracks you played lead guitar on in the Go-Gos? (You Thought comes to mind). Would just love to hear your interpretation all these years later. 2nd, since I'm new to Substack and not too familiar, who do you recommend following? Thanks 😊
Hi Joe, On the main page of my substack it has some recommendations. Hanif Kureishi is my absolute favorite though. As for playing the Talk Show solos on a video, hmm, I'd have to have nothing else to do before I'd be inclined to do that and I don't see that happening anytime soon!! sorry!
If I were famous, I'd do a convention in a cold minute. It sounds like hard work, though, having to be "on" for two-three entire days. Wil Wheaton, of "Star Trek" fame, has talked about that, and I believe him. Some of those Trek actors are hilarious speakers, BTW; I saw Gates McFadden, LeVar Burton and Michael Dorn at one of those conventions, and they brought down the house. It was like a comedy club except there were Klingons in the audience.
It is tiring because neither we don't phone it in and give our full attention and presence to anyone who has gone through the effort and time (and cost) to come meet us! By the end of the day I'm toastttty!!
I think the comic thing is generational. I used to love sitting in our living room reading comic books. And those sea monkeys!
I'm sad I'm missing you in NYC! I'm currently flying from JFK to Honolulu - heading back home. I lived in NYC for 25 years, and being back as a tourist was weird. And fun. It would have been great to see you guys.
While I was in NYC, I was notified that I'm officially a dual citizen! Proud to be an EU citizen now! I hope you can get your UK passport soon! (Lame that they ditched the EU, but oh well).
The sea monkeys and the x-ray spex and the drawing contests... Congrats on your EU citizenship. I'm still waiting to hear from the embassy about my ceremony + certificate. Can't get the passport or really be a citizen until that. thank you for reading and subscribing Christopher
I love this dispatch. Those of us who grew up in the 60's/70's certainly had a lot of ear worm jingles forced in our brain. I think the one I remember the most is the "My Bologna Has a First Name..." Thanks to those "Mad Men" advertiser guys (loved that show!) !! I didn't read a lot of comics, but I was really into Mad magazine as a pre-teen. Always thought it was so silly the parodies they did and the back of the magazine folding into another picture thing. I'm also a night-owl by nature, and after recently retiring from 19 yrs of working swing shifts at 911, it's so weird that I'm actually going to bed by midnight and waking up by 7...without an alarm!! Who knew? I'm currently on a week+ fun road trip along the California-Oregon coast with my oldest daughter who turns 40 in October... EGADS! How did that happen? It's been great seeing and staying in so many cool coastal towns. I've been to 2 Comic Cons and they were both in San Jose when Jane was there. I'm hoping to see you and Gina at a future com. I look forward to your online Swag store!! Have a blast with Gina and thanks for sharing some stories with us. :)
Luvd you in the 80s Kathy, still luv you now. The music Era I was so lucky to be born in will forever be the best. The Gogos were one of my very favorites, what you ladies did alone was just awesome, and look at your competition. Back then you competed with the best and won! I still have my beauty and the beat cassette , tapes wore out lol. Had to work over and missed you at grimeys in nasheville, hope I get chance again to meet and greet, here you sing vacation in person. Take care darlin, luv watchn you take stage dance with that base guitar!!
Yikes....my new favorite old word...Not a night owl but have busy brain insomnia frequently....should probably put it to use on paper. Loving the column. Enjoyed visiting with you both at the con a few weeks ago....had never been to one of those before. Wasn't into that until i was an adult so consider myself a retro nerd now 🙃
I'm a night owl now. Haven't always been. Working for the State of Texas was taxing. I prefer the night time reading that you give us. And just being able to communicate with you in this type of forum is everything to me. I can't wait for everything that you are working on!
Thank you for the comic book memories! And you’re right, Archie comics were the first time I saw “egad.” I think Mr. Lodge said it a lot. I forgot about Dot and Lotta. I think there was an Audrey, too. Appreciate the great memories.
I think his name was Hiram Lodge. Archie comics were awesome. Thanks again for evoking memories of my childhood. You just might be the most humble and down-to-Earth rock star.
Some other thoughts on this one (I do enjoy hearing about what you're up to):
1) The colors have a better love life than I do.
2) I wish I could go to NY to see you and Gina together. I'm still contemplating trying...but I probably won't make it to this one. The Go-Go's sometimes break my heart (not touring like a lot of the other bands from the 80's-on). I feel a particular affinity with you and Gina, because I feel like you two would have kept it going if you could have.
3) I'm an extreme night owl. I've half-heartedly tried to get to bed at a decent time (especially on work days)...but it just doesn't feel natural. So yes...I'm a zombie at work sometimes, and I sleep in, way too late, on weekends. Hopefully I'll get my standup comedy career going again...and it will make sense to be up late every night.
4) Can't wait to hear your new songs, all finished!
5) I'll check out the swag, in your online store.
6) Off I go now...to watch more t.v., instead of getting in bed where I should be on a work night...Cheers!
I used to be a night owl, but my internal clock shifted, and now I’m mostly an early bird. It’s have no words of wisdom as to how that happened, other than my body now likes getting up early, and I’ve pretty much lost interest in staying up late…a few epic evenings in recent years, notwithstanding.
I can’t stop being a night owl! even with meds, “sleep hygiene”, etc. I’m just not great at sleeping, in general.
I love egads! (that’s actually not a bad wordle starter!) I wasn’t one for comics, but I swear there’s a character in old 70s cartoons that said it often. I want to say that pink tiger: Snagglepuss (?), but it could definitely be a different character with the same or a similar sounding voice actor? So many Hanna Barbera shows & characters blend together.
Enjoy the weekend with Gina!! Hoping I’ll be able to make it to something before you move. (and hopefully get everyone their crochet somehow 😔) ❤️❤️
Oh I know, so disappointing that you couldn't come after we had all the cancellations. It would be nice for everyone to get their crochets in person. What is sleep hygiene????
I know- that would be the BEST! The in person moments are such a gift~ I know you know the feeling when someone loves your creativity/art/work 💓 Sleep hygiene is a bunch of things that are supposed to help you fall asleep: no screens for x amount of time before bed, very dark room, etc. I’ll send you a link on Twitter!

Thanks, I will

No worries! You're still the best. ❤️

Yes the folding back cover, and the little tiny comics on the margins. I also liked Cracked. !!!

Hi Jules, I'm glad we were at the same very first comic con for us!
That’s me!
I'm a night owl now. Haven't always been. Working for the State of Texas was taxing. I prefer the night time reading that you give us. And just being able to communicate with you in this type of forum is everything to me. I can't wait for everything that you are working on!

Oh! Maybe it was Mr Lodge and not Mr Wetherbee!!! I think you're right Stephen!! Wasn't it Cabot Lodge the III or something like that??
I think his name was Hiram Lodge. Archie comics were awesome. Thanks again for evoking memories of my childhood. You just might be the most humble and down-to-Earth rock star.

1. I watched that for a really long time! Was trying to find a pattern and couldn't
2. You're right about that! I miss playing on a big level, but I do love my Austin band and at least I still get to play
the rest, thank you for reading and commenting Joyce! xk
Ha. I say "egads" occasionally (mostly to be funny), precisely because I was an Archie comics fan!
If I forced myself to get up early I might be able to switch it, but I always flip back!!
I can’t stop being a night owl! even with meds, “sleep hygiene”, etc. I’m just not great at sleeping, in general.

My fave “cartoon-adjacent” words (that absolutely no one asked for) are:
Jinkies!
Zoinks!
and I love replacing words with “Smurf” whenever possible. 😂
