I really love and relate to your posts, especially when you share your inner world and feelings.
When I read: "To be a part of something while simultaneously being so separate from it" - that kind of stopped me in my tracks. I've been feeling that way all my life. Usually judging it as a shortcoming. You helped reframe that for me. To be more accepting. It also reminded me of a passage from a travel memoir I've been reading: "Feeling like you don't fully belong anywhere probably means that you belong a little bit everywhere."
And when you write about "not knowing"...OMG, is that relatable! It's a teaching my yoga teacher/ doc subject has been discussing a lot. Learning to live with not knowing. With confusion. Embracing, even celebrating that. Easier said than done, of course..
Can I mention that I read your post on my phone in a movie theater, waiting for The Invite to start?! (Loved it)
Finally: I couldn't help but notice there are 67 comments as I write this. And we are both 67 (OK, I'm 15 days older).

I like that too, the idea of belonging to many places. I do enjoy that I'm comfortable and know my way around in several cities! thank you for the kind words Mitch.
I also live with a great deal of I don't know these days-- I think certainty decreases as we age -- but I do know that you've captured I don't know-ing perfectly, as well as the pleasure of being alone in a large crowd.
Such a beautiful essay Kathy. As always. The idea of moving through time and space not knowing -- not knowing who or where or what we're supposed to be, or what comes next, or whether our work will find an audience -- feels particularly spot on right now. If you make the music, we will listen to the music. If you write the book, we will read the book. You can be sure of that.

It's a small world, in reverse. I live near Amsterdam, in Utrecht, and last week I was in London. I went to screenings at both Picturehouse Central and the BFI. The BFI is really a treasure.
Happy to hear you enjoyed the wonder of Amsterdam. Despite the overload of tourists it's still a pretty special place.
If we're being honest with ourselves, most of us don't know a heck of a lot, but we go out each day and try to inch a little closer to figuring it out.
I've heard great things about BFI, it's on my list! I agree, there were way too many americans in Amsterdam--my last several travels there were no US tourists and it was kind of cool. But also, you're right, it didn't prevent me enjoying and loving AMsterdam
If you have the time next time, check out our lovely city, Utrecht. Less than half an hour from Amsterdam, with possibly even more beautiful canals, and definitely less tourists.
Kathy, I love this post, and in some ways, I have lived some of these same type experiences. Amsterdam is perhaps my favorite city in the world (I still have a lot to visit though). I love roaming the streets and alleys with absolutely no plan in mind because you're always going to experience something great, and yes, the people are always welcoming. And your experience with the Van Gogh painting is something I experienced with the Yves Klein IKB at the Tate London back on a Friday late in February 2020. Thanks as always for this great writing.
This is one of my favorite entries you've written. I really appreciate your approach to life.... And now I've got Talking Heads', "We're on the Road to Nowhere," stuck in my head as the soundtrack to this post!
Great post (again) Kathy! I am pondering virtually all the same thoughts that you are having. Thinking about how much time I have left is a big one! I love going to places like retro diners that take me back to my younger days. I am also a big fan of train travel having done many round trips from Massachusetts to Florida. I rarely go out to the theater anymore but I've watched a ton of movies from the 60's and 70's lately. I hope you're having a great Summer!
None of us know. But travel lately is stimulating. The great escape. The lovely feeling of being home. Love how your mind works I long for a time living in Europe getting on a train being in another place learning the culture eating the food always about the food . Going to museums getting moved by art the richness of life . So we don’t have to know just be and enjoy. Be well keep writing
